Class Nationally and locally recognized for her outstanding contributions as Teacher and counselor, Hester Provensen had a simple philosophy: Just listen to people, hear how they feel, and bring out the best in them". It is her formula for building cohesive groups of women who dramatically improve their public speaking skills. Capital Speakers Club, Inc. was founded on April 19, 1951 and incorporated on January 29, 1963, for the purpose of education. In 1993 Hester Provensen retired and the teaching of the Capital Speakers Class was assumed by Jean Costanza Miller, Ph.D., an Assistant Professor of Communications at George Washington University. Dr. Miller continues the tradition of teaching Spring and Fall Sessions with classes of a maximum of 22 students sponsored by CSC members. Graduates are invited to join the Club. Meeting weekly for eight weeks, Capital Speakers Classes begin in January and September. Students are sponsored by Club members, and graduates are invited to join their sponsors' Chapter. In 1994, the Hester Beall Provensen Scholarship Award was established for students pursuing university studies in communication, speech and/or drama. In 2001, a charitable foundation was created, enabling tax-deductible scholarship donations.
